Career guidance for every South African learner

Helping learners make informed education and career decisions

We provide career guidance, digital assessments, education pathway information and post-school support that help young people unlock their future, starting with the schools that have the least access.

Why Namela exists

Big decisions. Almost no guidance.

Across township, rural and under-resourced schools, talented young people make the most consequential decisions of their lives, what to study, where, and how to fund it, with little or no professional guidance.

The cost compounds: qualification switching, first-year dropout, family financial loss, wasted NSFAS funding and a labour market full of skills mismatches. Namela treats this as a system failure with a system solution: career navigation infrastructure, built to endure beyond any single grant.

This is, at its core, a problem of access to information. And it is solvable. Namela Development Institute, founding premise
  • Subject choices made without understanding where they lead
  • Applications to programmes that do not match interests or abilities
  • NSFAS and bursary deadlines missed through simple information gaps
  • First-year dropout and qualification switching that drain families and public funds
  • Employers reporting persistent skills shortages

Our vision: a South Africa where every learner can confidently choose and pursue a meaningful education and career pathway. Our values: informed choice, access and equity, ubuntu, evidence, sustainability and dignity.

Programmes

Three programmes. One navigation system.

Each programme is a stage of the same journey, delivered by trained facilitators and underpinned by digital assessment, a learner database and tracking through transition.

Grades 8–12 · in schools

Career Compass

Structured career guidance inside schools, built around each learner.

  • Digital career profiling and aptitude assessments
  • Subject choice and pathway guidance
  • University and TVET pathway mapping
  • NSFAS and bursary guidance
  • Parent and guardian information sessions

Outcome: every learner leaves with an individual career profile report and a facilitated guidance session.

Matriculants & youth 18–35

Post-School Pathways

Transition support for young people stepping beyond the school gate.

  • Matric results interpretation
  • Study options mapping and application assistance
  • Learnership, apprenticeship and entrepreneurship pathways
  • Matric upgrade guidance
  • Employment readiness and referrals

Outcome: better-matched applications and sustained engagement in study, training or work.

The digital engine

Digital Career Access

The technology that extends reach and lowers cost per learner.

  • Assessments on programme devices, reports generated immediately
  • Learner database tracking every journey through transition
  • Dashboards that turn delivery into funder-grade evidence
  • Online career exploration resources

Outcome: build once, reuse everywhere, so impact per rand invested compounds as we grow.

Delivery model

Seven steps with every learner

Not a once-off careers talk. Mobile outreach teams take this full sequence directly into schools, then stay on the journey through transition.

  1. 01

    Spark

A career awareness session opens up what is possible.

  2. 02

    Assess

A digital assessment maps aptitude, interests and strengths.

  3. 03

    Report

Each learner receives their own career profile report, on the spot.

  4. 04

    Interpret

A facilitator helps each learner make sense of their results.

  5. 05

    Plan

Subjects, qualifications and pathways are matched and mapped.

  6. 06

    Apply

Hands-on support for university, TVET, NSFAS and bursary applications.

  7. 07

    Track

Support continues through the transition, not only on visit day.

Career guidance is the service. Career navigation is the outcome.

Our measurement framework

Built to be accountable from day one

Namela is in its set-up phase. We have not yet delivered programmes or collected learner data. What we have done is build the measurement infrastructure before we start, so that every rand invested from the first day is tracked, reported and evidenced.

The figures below are Year 1 pilot targets, not results. We are raising the funding to deliver them. We believe funders deserve that distinction stated clearly.

Year 1 pilot targets — what success looks like

2,000
learners to receive assessments and individual career profile reports
Target
10
schools to be reached across the Free State pilot
Target
75%
of learners expected to report a clearer subject or study decision
Target
80%+
of pilot schools to be in township, rural or under-served settings
Target

Admission, funding and placement outcomes will be tracked from Year 1 and converted into firm targets for Year 2 once pilot baselines exist. We will not claim results we have not earned.

How we will measure what changes

Our Monitoring and Evaluation Framework is already written and published. It defines, in advance, exactly how every target will be verified.

  • Access — schools, learners and communities reached, disaggregated by setting and grade
  • Outcomes — career awareness and decision clarity, measured baseline to endline by pre- and post-survey
  • Applications — tertiary, TVET, NSFAS and bursary submissions, logged per learner
  • Transitions — admissions, funding secured and placements, followed up at 6 and 12 months
  • External review — an independent outcome review at the end of Year 1

  • Visible matric outcomesPractical help with university, TVET, NSFAS and bursary applications.

What does the school need to provide?

Principal approval, a venue with access to power, help distributing parent and learner consent forms, and a nominated staff contact. We bring everything else.

How long does a visit take?

A typical engagement runs over one to a few days per grade group, scheduled to fit your school calendar and avoid examination periods.

How is learner data handled?

Participation is voluntary and requires parent or guardian consent for learners under 18. Information is held securely, used only to deliver and improve the programme, and reported in anonymised form.
